Good Governance Video Series Now Live on Funding Fox

Regulators and funders want to see that your governance arrangements are robust, proportionate and working in practice.

Inside the New Eight-Part Governance Video Series

The series is built around the AELP Code of Good Governance for Independent Training Providers (updated April 2024), but translated into practical, plain-English explanations rather than legalese. Each video is short, focused and designed for busy governors, owners, senior leaders and quality/compliance staff.

Video 1 – Good Governance for Independent Training Providers: Why It Matters

This opening video sets the scene. It explains why ITP governance is suddenly such a hot topic, how the AELP Code and DfE ITP Financial Handbook fit together, and what "good governance" actually looks like in an apprenticeship and skills context. It's ideal as a shared starting point for your board, including non-executive directors and owners who may be newer to the sector.

Video 2 – Setting the Direction: Strategic Leadership in Training Organisations

Video two looks at strategy and leadership. It explores how boards set vision, values and long-term direction, and how they stay strategic rather than being dragged into day-to-day operational decisions. It also touches on the crucial link between board-level decisions and the culture learners and staff experience on the ground.

Video 3 – Who's in Charge? Governance Structures, Roles and Accountability

This video unpicks the relationship between the board, the chief executive and the senior team. It looks at independent challenge, schemes of delegation, and how even small or owner-managed providers can build credible oversight. The emphasis is on clarity: who decides what, and how is that decision-making documented and reviewed?

Video 4 – Stewarding Public Money: Finance, Risk and Audit for ITP Boards

Here we move into financial strategy and audit. The video explains the board's responsibilities for setting budgets, understanding risk appetite, approving financial regulations and ensuring there are effective internal controls. It also shows how governance links directly to the DfE ITP Financial Handbook requirements around good practice in financial management.

Video 5 – Driving Quality: Teaching, Learning and Outcomes for Learners

Good governance doesn't stop at the balance sheet. Video five focuses on how boards assure themselves about the quality of teaching, training and assessment, and about learner progress and outcomes. It looks at performance indicators, learner and employer feedback, self-assessment and the use of data across different types of provision, including subcontracting.

Video 6 – Safe, Fair and Inclusive: EDI and Safeguarding in ITP Governance

This video explains the board's role in creating a safe, fair and inclusive environment. It covers equality and diversity strategy, safeguarding and Prevent duties, complaints and whistleblowing routes, and how boards should receive and act on information about concerns. The aim is to move beyond basic compliance to a proactive, learner-centred approach.

Video 7 – Being Open: Transparency, Reporting and Stakeholder Trust

Here we look at openness and accountability: how providers communicate their mission, performance and decisions to learners, employers, staff, funders and the wider public. The video covers annual reports, financial statements, public benefit reporting for charities, and practical ways to engage stakeholders and report on progress.

Video 8 – Making Governance Work: Board Effectiveness and Continuous Improvement

The final video brings everything together by focusing on board effectiveness itself. It looks at board composition, recruitment and succession, induction and ongoing development, evaluation and self-assessment, and remuneration and severance decisions. The message is that good governance is a living practice, not a static organogram.

Across all eight videos, the emphasis is on real-world application: what boards can do next week to strengthen governance, not just what the documents say in theory.
